About Lucy
Lucy's interest in Triathlon began in March 2005 when her brother Morgan suggested that she enter a sprint distance triathlon in Southwell, Nottingham, UK. This was a race that he had entered as his first triathlon the previous year. When she asked "What is a Triathlon?" and was subsequently told Swim, Bike, Run - she explained that she couldn't swim! "Oh that doesn't omatter, neither could I when I entered last year" was Morgan's reply! So with no prior athletic background, her main exercise being gained from dancing on a night out and a reputation for being more of an 'Endurance Party Girl' than any athlete... she borrowed a bike and started training.
With legs shaking and tears rolling down her face from fear of the swim, she completed her first triathlon, with a 400m doggy paddle style swim and was stoked to have finished in a time of 1hr 18mins! She beat her brothers time for his first tri on that same course and everyone began joking that the challenge was on to see who would be fastest! Brother or Sister! Okay so, if this was the case, Lucy had to learn to swim!
Lucy moved to New Zealand in August 2005. The first thing she did was buy a bike and started swimming lessons with Spencer at the Tepid Baths. She set herself a goal of completing the SHE Triathlon on the 26th February 2006 and whilst she was confident she could complete the bike and the run, the main aim was to swim the full 300metres in Freestyle. It was a wonderful day and Lucy came 2nd Overall, but funnily enough, didn't manage to complete the swim Freestyle, it was the usual medley of breastroke, backstroke and doggy paddle, so I knew she still had a lot of work to do!
Lucy's swimming was always at the butt-end of all the jokes, being likened to swimming like a brick and people offering to bring their washing to the pool as she was thrasing about so much.
So you can imagine everyone's disbelief/shock when she decided to train for Ironman at Taupo in 2007.... No small goals for Lucy.... just straight in for the big one! Always aim high! If anything was going to push her to learn to swim it was a huge challenge such as this!
In fact, she was so positive about the season ahead and was enjoying training so much, that she went out and bought a Cervelo P3C and some Zipp 404 racing wheels. This was probably the best investment she could have made, although she had been told that unless you're going to do 4 Ironman's in a year it wouldn't be worth the investment. Most people thought that a similar investment in better wetsuit would be a good idea at this stage!
Lucy had a fantastic year and she has now completed a number of Standard (Olympic) Distance races, Half Ironman's, an ITU Long Distance World Champs and the Ironman New Zealand at Taupo in March 2007 and 2008. In March this year Lucy qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
Lucy's adventures and races over the next several months should keep us all entertained and she will be really grateful for your support so keep an eye on all the other pages on the website for regular updates!
